Los Angeles is the largest city in the state of California and the second-largest in the United States, one of the world’s leading financial, industrial and entertainment cities. It is a clobal city with the population of about 12.9 million. It was founded in 1781 by Spanish Captain Rivera y Moncada, and primarily was a part of Mexico. It was incorporated in the United States in 1848, when Spain ceded California to the United States. It is a cosmopolitan centre, with probably more languages spoken and cultures mixed, than in any other city. California Gold Rush contributed to its turning into a thriving commercial city and caused enormous flow of immigrants. Railroads and oil discovery in 1892 furthered the development of industries.
The city has warm, dry, Mediterranean type climate, very favourable in itself, though heavy pollution was and remains the city’s crucial problem. Recent experimenting with environmental-friendly technologies brought considerable positive results. The city, spanning 469 square miles, combines various landscapes – seashore, mountains, wetlands, sandy beaches and dunes. It boasts immense diversity of native plants, wonderful landscape parks, such as Descanso Gardens.
It is the world cinema industry center, the home of the most popular football and basketball teams, National Hockey League, windsurfing and yacht marina. It hosted 1932 and 1984 Olympics. The economy of the city is powered by international trade, entertainment, aerospace, technology, petroleum, fashion and tourism. Other industries are represented by finance, telecommunication, law, medicine, transport. The city is home to headquarters of many international offices and financial institutions. Among them such cinema Giants as Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, XX Century Fox, Walt Disney Corporation, Dream Works, Warner Bros. – in fact, all those who define the state of contemporary mainstream cinema. The city is world renowned for its casinos, entertainment centres, music recording companies and the most posh and trendy nightclubs.
