Car rental is absolutely indispensable if one wants to see something apart from Disneyland and some other boring tourist attractions or visit beach towns other than crowded Venice or Santa Monica. There is plenty of car rental companies. They offer full range of vehicles from economy class to luxurious and exotic, so hiring a car to one’s personal taste in not a problem. Intermediate and full size cars are recommended, for economy cars, suitable for heavy city traffic, not always have sufficient engine power for highways or have very little room for luggage.

Most rental companies require credit card for payment. Age policies are also rather strict. Most of them rent a car only to a person older than 25. Some do rent cars to those who are 21, but require under-age surcharge, which can turn out to be quite considerable in a long-time rental. Those who are under 21 would have problems renting a car. Only the person who rents a car is permitted to drive. If somebody else will be driving this car, it should be mentioned during check-in. Sometimes additional fee for the second driver is charged.

A basic insurance is often included, but it offers only a limited coverage of damage, so several better options are available. LDW (Loss Damage Waiver) or CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) will cover the cost in case of theft or damage, LIS (Liability Insurance Supplement) will cover the cost of any damages or injuries the driver is involved in.

All rental cars in the USA have air conditioning, airbags, a radio or CD/cassette player and an automatic gear. Upgraded cars may also be equipped with cruise control, satellite navigation system. The most popular companies are Hertz, AVIS, FlexCar.
